There are a lot of claims made for the power of positive thinking, and it’s probably safe to say that it’s a multi-million dollar industry right now.
Positive thinking is a product that’s easy to market. Why? Because we all want to believe that it can improve our lives, help us get whatever it is we want, and move us one step closer to that universal goal of perfection.
Most of us really do believe that positive thinking is right, wholesome and achieveable. So why don’t we do it? Why do most of us spend a very large percentage of our lives doing the very opposite — viewing our problems and challenges negatively?
Seth Godin has the answer. Read his thoughts on The Problem With Positive Thinking.
So easy to become negative about blogging
At times it’s all too easy to allow negative thoughts to take over. Let’s look at one example — online marketing. You’ve started a great blog, worked hard to get it right, to get the content together, to tweak the design, to attract visitors, but it’s not working. Your stats are totally miserable. It’s like setting up your home for a great celebration, getting the food, the balloons, the streamers, and sending out great invitations to everyone in town — but nobody comes to the party. Here you are with all the goodies you have to share and nobody cares. So negative thoughts arise and in some weird way they are strangely comforting.
As Seth point out, negative thinking feels good. It gives us an out. We don’t want to do the hard yard, so let’s just get negative.
What’s the answer
We set up a great place for a party, but perhaps now it’s time to really work at getting people interested. Maybe if a few show up that will give us enough stimulus to think positively and keep at it. Then gradually we’ll get to party with the whole town.

Hi Kay! Yes totally agree!
I’ve set my blog up for a party and included a lot of the content that is supposed to attract but not a lot happening!
I’m wondering if there is a lot of marketing of how to market by people who never found the right company to give them the true success they talk about!
Keep up your great articles.
Beverly
It’s a mystery why people are programmed for negativity, whence they have the power to make things happen. Perhaps being positive is the first step in discovering our errors, then with this comes the awareness of our true capabilities.
@Beverly. Thanks for your support. It really helps to get comments. We know there’s someone out there.
@Walter. That’s an interesting idea. Becoming more positive perhaps in stages. Two steps forward one step back.
